Shearer hatrick not enough to save the day V Monkstown
By edward simpson
Rugby Day and Valentines day didn't bode well for TRR
Valentines Day was not a good day for TRR in 2015, the 4's lost 0-2 and the 1's 1-2 to Monkstown, would TRR M3's fare any better?
Would you believe in a late kick off - to coincide with Ire V France kick off at Aviva) - we had the chances to win this game, but ended up on the losing end of a 5-3 defeat.
We were ring rusty with one match played since Dec 6th, a gritty 3-3 draw with Mullingar, and our captain and arguably we play to our very best when he plays, Stephen F was unable to play (we wish him a speedy recovery, if thats possible), but very kindly umpired - I thought he had a good game, sifting through all the whingeing.
Ritchie reminded me of how important a good warm up, and there was a real sense of a big performance for a big match... from the start we played good hockey, with tempo, ball speed, moving the ball through the channels, attack and defend with good shape, opportunities
arose both ends but defense held until hatrick Shearer pounced 0-1 to TRR. Monkstown had created several drives down their right hand side, with seemingly little or no contest from our left hard side of the pitch, resulting in short corners, and Monkstown opened their scoring with a good goal 1-1 (I think this was the right sequence)
We continued to work hard, tails up and created more pressure resulting in Shearer 'placing' and scoring a good goal, 1-2 to the half time whistle. Dylan and Scott C called the shots at half time, for the next 15 mins or so Scott x 3, Ed x 2, Greeny, Rig, ritchie, Mack, Phil, Ryan, Arthur all controlled and created wave after wave of chances with Town keeper saving well, resulting in several unsuccessful shorties.
Town immediately responded with TRR conceded several shorties, and a goal 2-2, only for hatrick Shearer to put us ahead with his third goal of the day 2-3...
In a moment of madness we lost our heads, we created so many chances the author lost count, and when inevitably Town countered we forget to defend, conceding two identical goals, both shots were saved, with Town reacting quicker to score 2 goals 4-3.
We pushed really hard, created plenty if chances, Town keeper making some good saves, but in the main apart from Phil our finishing could have, should have been better.
Take nothing away from Town who never gave up, running out eventual winners 5-3, we need to play to the same intensity V Clontarf on Sat but bring our finishing shoes, and get back in the groove.
Thanks to Stephen for umpiring - he did very well, Dylan managing us, and to all you guys who on Rugby Day and Valentines Day put in a good performance.
MOM - I see teamer has already announced this with one vote cast, there were some contenders here, Ben E, Scott C and Arthur with strong performances, but yes to prevent any whingeing in the Shearer ranks, my MOM goes to Phil awesome... (must have been the author saying to Phil at the start of the match, placement will be key...) and yes its a jug for MOM and a jug for hatrick...
DOD - Only one real contender, Ed S, shouldn't have directed rebounds to Town CF, and yes I owe a jug or two!
